#NerdMusicMonday: Tenacious D – ‘Star Trek Theme’

Welcome to #NerdMusicMonday, where we feature some of the greatest geek-inspired music to start your week on the right note.

Did you know that the theme from Star Trek (also known as Where No Man Has Gone Before) actually has lyrics? If you’re not aware of this, the reason the theme has lyrics is actually a bit iffy. Sit down, boys and girls. It’s story time.

The Star Trek theme was composed by Alexander Courage and was aired in both the opening and closing credits of the show from September 8, 1966, up to June 3, 1969. However, lyrics were written for the theme song without Courage’s knowledge by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. He wrote them not because he wanted the lyrics to be sung, but in order to secure a co-writer credit and get a 50% share of the song’s performance royalties. Yeah, pretty shady.

Anyway, the lyrics are out there, and they are beautifully-written lyrics. Here’s Tenacious D, performer of wonderful songs such as Fuck Her Gently and The Government Totally Sucks, playing the theme from Star Trek.

In case you were wondering, here are the lyrics to the Star Trek theme as well:

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand’ring in star-flight
I know
He’ll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.
