You’ve heard about the tutorial and the new mechanics, so lets delve more into the most exciting part of the update: the new characters. Revelator introduces six new characters to Guilty Gear Xrd; three new and three returning. The three new characters are Jack-O, Kum Haehyun, and Raven. While Johnny, Jam, and Dizzy are back to slug it out with rest. With these six new characters, it brings the current roster up to 23. Each of these 23 characters play very uniquely from one another (with one or 2 exceptions). The stand-out of the cast is Jack-O who barely qualifies for a “fighting game character”. She plays more like a tower defense game onto herself. Her special moves consist of putting down “houses” that spawn minions that are used to harass opponents and keep them locked down. Either way, out of these 23 people, there’s one for everyone. My personal favorites are Ramlethal and Dizzy (the former being my main, and the latter being the character I am most interested in learning and picking up).
Revelator also has an AMAZING story mode, which was pretty much a five-hour anime movie. The story mode also gave us hints at the new characters who are soon to follow (be it more DLC, or, HOPEFULLY, in the next game). Namely Baiken, Robo-Ky, and Zappa all made appearances, and were in fact quite integral to the story.
It’s probably the most complete package of a fighting game; packed to the brim with content. And because all of the six new characters come at no extra cost, it’s great value for money. This is the game that Street Fighter V wishes to be. I loved that game, but DAMN does Revelator stomp that game into the ground content- and value-wise. If you’ve ever been interested in Guilty Gear, now’s the time to pick it up. I’ll be playing this game for years to come.
