Supporting Actor

Drama Supporting Actor HBO

  • Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut, Better Call Saul
  • Jim Carter as Charles Carson, Downton Abbey
  • Alan Cumming as Eli Gold, The Good Wife
  • Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Game of Thrones
  • Michael Kelly as Doug Stamper, House of Cards
  • Ben Mendelsohn as Danny Rayburn, Bloodline

Sean: “With only Peter Dinklage and Jim Carter as the returning nominees, the category feels new, making a fun race; it also helps that each of the nominees are very deserving, though Jim Carter’s nomination is a little suspect considering the comparative weakness of the material he was given. That said, a couple of snubs stung: Walton Goggins, John Slattery, and Vincent Karthieser got ignored in spite of doing some of their best work on the final seasons of their respective shows, and Andre Holland got snubbed in spite of doing masterful work on The Knick.”

Kim: “Supporting tends to feel that way, especially on TV. Even in film awards like the Oscars, I always thought the Supporting Actor categories were the most talented and refreshing bunch. Supporting will always be the easiest to make snub comments on since they’re just so many of them, especially character actors. The biggest surprise for me was the lack of Vincent D’Onofrio for Marvel’s Daredevil. Say what you want about the show itself but you can’t deny the low-key ferocity of his performance. Such a shame. I’d replace Michael Kelly and Jim Carter with Goggins/D’Onofrio and Slattery. Still, great list overall.”
