(or major ones depending on how you look at it)
Webcomics, unlike its printed kin, tend to be less shackled by traditional social norms. It’s much easier to push the envelope on exploring ideas. One of the longest running webcomics that tries its best to capture the authenticity of life is Jeph Jacques’ Questionable Content. To be honest, though, it’s about as authentic as an alternate universe Canada that has sentient robots can be. The story revolves around Marten Reed and his ever growing circle of eclectic friends. One of those buddies is Claire Augustus .
Claire was introduced into the story as an intern at the public library that Marten’s working at. She’s an up and at ‘em library science major who very often scolds Marten who’s just kind of working there. As the story goes by, Claire and her fellow interns were absorbed into Marten’s group of weirdos. This all culminated in a cabin party to relax, followed by a sudden, surprising revelation.
Many adventures and more than 400 strips later, Claire developed an adorable crush on Marten. The easily flustered ginger gets teased about it to no end, especially when she gets invited out for a drink for the first time. One thing led to another but rational minds prevailed, much to the chagrin of some. But, that’s all it took to get the ball rollin’.
Officially a couple, Marten and Claire continue to have a terribly sweet and pun-tastic relationship with each other. As the relationship matured and as a well-needed juxtaposition against the heavy plot at the time, the pair took the next step and it was beautiful.
Fiction can be harsh mirror for reality. However, it can also be an idealistic reflection for what life and society can aspire to be. The world can be a cruel place for those who are different but I hope the abridged story of the ClarTen ship can act as a shining beacon of acceptance for all. There have been many kinds of relationships in this webcomic, healthy, dysfunctional and everything in between, but I must declare that this is definitely one of my dark horse favorites in any medium.
