‘Orange is the New Black’ Doing Time for 3 More Seasons!
Breakout Netflix show Orange is the New Black just got 3 more seasons! Yes, you read it right: seasons 5, 6, and 7 are in the bag. Creator and writer Jenji Kohan is also contracted to stay on.
Season 4 is on its way for another binge watch marathon for millions of viewers later this year. On the extended prison sentences, Jenji Kohan has this to say:
“Three more years! Not quite a political term, but still plenty of time to do some interesting things. In some cultures, ‘May you lead an interesting life,’ is a curse, but I don’t live in those cultures. Here’s to keeping it interesting. Thanks Netflix! Both thanks and you’re welcome Lionsgate! And kudos and gratitude to the stellar cast and crew and writers and producers and editors and musicians and mixers and shleppers… with whom I have the pride and honor of crafting this show. Three more years! Three more years!”
This show has been a high light in my viewing experience for as long as it has been. While marketed as a comedy, the series actually showcases a lot of drama drawn from each of the characters individual stories. Reading from the actual book, life behind bars isn’t actually as funny or quirky as the show makes it out to be but it does present a lot of hearts in the right place. There women are criminals who’ve actually committed crimes in some way or another. In a minimum security prison, they’re not exposed to the extreme horrors of max, but you gotta lend it to the cast when they show no matter how idiosyncratic life has gotten inside the place, actual freedom is still the reality they want to live in. They entire cast has been doing a stellar job making this show one of the most watchable things in the 21st century.
But the main character Piper has only a sentence of 15 months in prison. Four more seasons is a lot of time to expand that plot, so I’m guessing we’re watching out for an extended sentence for her too as well the show. Which is to say, what dumb shit is she getting into this time?
